hivsCommunicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria kill millions of people each year.

They exact a terrible toll on society and the economy of developing countries. Although international awareness and funding to fight epidemic diseases have increased, much remains to be done.

Poverty, armed conflict, and natural disasters contribute to the spread of disease, reversing decades of progress made in improving the welfare of people. The spread of HIV/AIDS, the resurgence of tuberculosis, and increasing morbidity and mortality from malaria, mostly due to drug and insecticide resistant parasites, have had their greatest impact on poor people and poor countries, shortening life spans and curtailing economic growth.

Target 6.A
Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Target 6.B
Achieve, by 2010, universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it.

Target 6.C
Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.
