Many of the indicators represent work in progress. In some cases observations are sparse and still being compiled, or serve as benchmarks rather than time series; in others they are not yet available or are not yet adequately collected. It is hoped that the monitoring of progress towards the Goals will stimulate more interest in collecting good data.

The Millennium Development Goals have accelerated demand for data and highlighted limitations in their availability and quality. Significant number of countries do not have enough data to track changes in poverty, child malnutrition or HIV/AIDS prevalence, and in most countries serious data quality issues exist in measuring maternal mortality and access to water and sanitation. 	Compare and track progress on MDGs with Chart_it. The icon is found on goal or target pages and will take you through a country selection menu to produce a chart of related target indicators. In Chart_it window, you can: - select country/region. Selection is maintained throughout. - view data in table. - view chart. - compare with another target on any other goal. 	Retrieve MDG data through a Quick Query tool. Select country/region, targets, and time period. See the result in table, chart, map, or export data to Excel.
	Map and data tables of goal related indicators for 5 year intervals. MRV or most recent value function is used for extended coverage. For actual data points, refer to Quick Query tool above.
Country tables	There are 227 tables covering regional and income groups, and developing countries with more than 30,000 population (or smaller countries that are World Bank members). They present time series data for 4 of the last 18 years, as available. In some cases the data are for earlier or later years than those stated. The selected indicators are the best available measures of progress towards the goals. For definitions, sources, and footnotes, click on the indicator name.
Goal tables	Each of the eight Goal tables presents the relevant indicators for every country in alphabetical order within regions.
Regional progress charts	A set of charts show the prospects of low-and middle-income countries, aggregated by region, reaching eight of the targets of the Millennium Development Goals.

Complete metadata of all MDG indicators have been prepared by a UNDP Inter-Agency Working Group, including the World Bank, co-chaired by UNFPA, UNSD and UNDP. For each indicator the document provides i) definition; ii) target; (iii) rationale; (iv) method of computation; (v) sources of data; (vi) references; (vii) periodicity of measurement; (viii) gender and disaggregation issues; (ix) limitations of the indicator; and (x) national and international agencies directly concerned with the collection, compilation and/or dissemination of the data. United Nations Statistics Division Millennium Indicators Database

United Nations Statistics Division has compiled a web site on MDG indicators based on data provided by leading agencies. The World Bank participates in the exchange of information and tries to maintain a dataset consistent with UNSD. However, some differences remain because of timing of updates, differences in sources, and definitions of regional groupings.
